Brewery Review: Pottstown United Brewing (Pottstown, PA)

Gemütlichkeit; the German word for “friendliness”. This is the word the owner and brewer of Pottstown United used to describe his brewery. Nestled on High Street in Pottstown you will find Pottstown United Brewing. This 2 floor, 4,000 square foot location is the only brewery you will come across in the city, however after one conversation with the owner, you should expect to see others pop up… but more on that later.

Pottstown United was founded in part by a name that should be familiar to most PA craft beer fans; Steve Armstrong. You may remember Steve from Armstrong Ales in Phoenixville. Steve picked up the brewing equipment and moved North West to open the only brewery in Pottstown. Prior to that he was home brewing for roughly 5 years. So when it comes to the beer you are enjoying you can trust you are in good hands.

Located in what was once a former Tannery and Jewelry store that has been standing since 1885, PUB offers 2 floors at 2,000 square feet each. The bottom floor houses the 3 barrel brewing system. And up above you will find the brewery/ restaurant. Steve was so dedicated to the project that he gutted and rebuilt the interior of the building himself!

The brewery offers 10 of their beers on tap, along with many guest taps as well. In addition to the beer you can also enjoy a weekly rotating menu of food specials. A lot of the time we get asked if a brewery is good for a group of people with a wide array of palates. And we would say PUB is the perfect location for both the hardened craft beer fan, and the person looking for an enjoyable night out, regardless of the beer.

The menu consists of starters, entrees, salads and desserts! We’d list some of the entrees available, but the menu changes so much that the food today, may not be the same as tomorrow. But trust us, you will not walk away disappointed in your meal. Just take a look at some of the delicious grub we enjoyed during our visit:

And of course a trip to a brewery wouldn’t be complete without the beer. As we mentioned PUB offers a constant rotation of beer that Steve comes up with on a regular schedule. During our visit we enjoyed a wide range of beers that were on tap. The style of beer that PUB produces is crisp, clean and hand crafted with a sense of pride in the brewing process.

Each beer had it’s own unique flavor profile. We highly recommend you giving them a try for yourself.

Pottstown United offers other unique qualities about them as well. Like the fact that they are one of the few breweries in Pennsylvania that is open 7 days a week. Or how Steve is such a big soccer fan that he opens his brewery at 7:30 AM every Saturday for a kegs and eggs style English Breakfast for soccer games. And of course brunch on Sunday’s if you can’t make it that early on a Saturday. One of the brewery co-owners is also a musician so PUB offers their own home made band set up for local performers!

We said earlier how you should hopefully see other breweries pop up in the area soon. One takeaway from our conversation with Steve was about how much he wanted to see the Pottstown brewery scene grow. As a brewery who once owned a business in Phoenixville he knows what craft brewing can do for a city. He would eventually like to see Pottstown become similar to what is happening in Phoenixville. So while they may be the only brewery in town, Steve does hope that changes. If you’re looking at Pottstown to start your own brewery, just know that Steve will support you 100%.

We highly recommend a visit to PUB. You can stop by their brewery on High Street 7 days a week. Can’t make it in just yet? Make sure to follow them on their Website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see all of the updates for yourself!
