Brewery Preview: Tannery Run Brew Works (Ambler, PA)

Ambler, Pennsylvania is adding to their ever growing craft beer scene with the addition of Tannery Run Brew Works who will be opening later this year. We recently took a tour of this future brewery to learn more about their story and what customers can expect. We visited with Carly, Mac and Tim who are the folks behind the brewery.

Main
Opening soon on Butler Ave in Ambler

Tannery Run is a 9,500+ square feet, 7 barrel brewery with a lot of history and even more to offer their customers! Along with the 7 barrel system, their brewery will offer 5 fermenters and 2 brite tanks. As we learned, Tannery Run specializes in what  they are defining as “splatch” brewing. We’ve toured hundreds of breweries and this was the first time we have ever run into this phrase, so if it is new to you we understand.

As we learned, splatch brewing is the process in which two beers are brewed from the same brew (split batch = splatch). And that doesn’t mean you’re getting a slight variety of the same beer. For example Tannery Run brewed a New England style IPA and Brut IPA through the splatch style. Two significantly different beers, coming from the same original brew. We are very excited to see what more this brewery will do through this unique style of brewing.

The almost 10,000 square feet of the brewery is split into two section. A 4,100+ square feet upstairs and 5,000+ square feet basement. Upstairs will house their taproom, brewery and even a kitchen! Tim comes from a 10+ year career of managing kitchens so this only made sense. Along with their beer, they will offer flatbreads, soups, salads, chicken wings and more. The taproom will offer a 12 tap system as well as wine and cocktails.

Downstairs is where it gets very interesting. While not being open right away, the downstairs will eventually offer a private event space, with it’s own bar, for guests to rent out. You may also be asking yourself how the brewery got it’s name. That is probably the most intriguing part of their downstairs area. Running directly below the brewery is the Tannery Run creek, hence the name. Don’t believe us? They have an opening to the creek right below the brewery!

The creek runs right below. And the brewery will install a clear casing for customers to see!

This feature article cannot be finished until we congratulate Tannery Run for another part of their brewery. During our visit we were told that Carly was working on earning her own pair of steel-toed pink rubber boots as a scholarship recipient of the Portland State University Online Business of Craft Brewing Certificate scholarship through The Pink Boots Society.

The Pink Boots Society is an international nonprofit organization that specifically focuses on promoting women in the beer industry. They have many local chapters and are doing amazing work within the craft beer space. As of this writing Carly was working her Pay-it-Forward presentation to be delivered at the next Greater Philadelphia Pink Boots chapter meeting on August 22, 2018 at Flying Fish Brewing Company. She earned her certificate and we are excited to see those pink boots in the Tannery Run brewhouse!

There is a lot going on at this location on Butler Ave in Ambler. We look forward to their continued growth as they get closer to their opening date. The expectation is for them to open in the fall this year. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see the growth. We will continue to keep you up to date on their opening.
