Unrefined from Voodoo Brewery

Unrefined is a 8.1% ABV IPA from Voodoo Brewery out of Meadville PA in between Erie and Pittsburgh.

The Unrefined IPAs series has a rotating variety of hops added, keeping this beer evolving and always different. The one we sampled was canned last month (February 2017) and dry hopped with both Equinox and Amarillo hops. Previous iterations of the beer have been made with hops such as: Azacca, Citra, Galaxy, Mosaic and Simcoe.

Pouring to a murky gold/orange there is a small head, but it quickly dissipates leaving some lacing on the glass. The Amarillo and Equinox combine nicely to create an aroma that is almost entirely citrus, some lemon and lime notes, but primarily fresh squeezed orange juice mixed with zest.

The nose follows nicely into a juice-forward taste, the orange continues to come through with a bit more of the floral aspects adding a bit of freshness and grassy nuance. As Unrefined finishes with a bit of bitterness that comes through, especially as this pale ale warms up.

Unrefined is another quality installment in a series that is a fun way for craft beer nerds and newbies to equally gain insight into the different profiles hops can bring to a beer.
