Top 5 Ranked Saisons in Pennsylvania

The saison, better known as that fruity carbonated beer that you have a hard time describing to people when they ask what it is. However, for the sake of precision the saison is a Belgian-style pale ale that is very carbonated and will generally use spices such as: orange zest, coriander and ginger. They can also referred to as farmhouse ales, this is derived from the brew’s origin as a low ABV beer served to farmhands in the Belgian countryside. Also, we almost had to change this list to “Top 5 Ranked* Tired Hands Saisons in Pennsylvania,” but Mckenzie’s just snuck in there.

  1. Farm Hands (Saison) – Tired Hands Brewing Company
    • 5.2% ABV
    • Brewed with a combination of 4 grains this ale pours to a hazy straw color with a slightly sour aroma of lemon zest. Tart without being completely sour there’s considerable carbonation in this crisp offering that taste mostly of lemon zest and earthy wheat.
  2. Saison Vautour (Saison) – McKenzie Brew House
    • 7.0% ABV
    • Pouring to a vibrant orange color with a bubbly white head it smells of freshly grated orange zest and true to the style, a yeasty funk. Dry, almost winelike there’s more orange flavor alongside spiciness and other citrus fruit. Balanced with malted rye Vautour is less tart than other saisons, while still holding the style’s signature tartness.
  3. Shambolic (Saison) – Tired Hands Brewing Company
    • 6.5% ABV
    • Light and golden in color with a very hazy appearence this is what happens when pineapple meets Nelson Sauvin and Simcoe hops. This is super funky smelling straight out of the bottle, like a big funky pineapple. With a dryness similiar to Vautour this considerably more sour and has a bitter dankness reminiscent of a double IPA.
  4. Out of the Emptiness (Saison) – Tired Hands Brewing Company
    • 7.0% ABV
    • Now for a little something different, as this saison pours to a red-orange after being fermented in wine barrels and conditioned on Italian plums. There’s a lovely aroma of baked spiced plums that leads into a mild flavor that has sweetness without being as sour as Shambolic.
  5. Sticky Drippy Crystals (Saison) – Tired Hands Brewing Company
    • N/A% ABV
    • Pouring to a light yellow hay color there’s some funk scent when pouring, but it is largely hidden behind a honey sweetness. Balancing a honey flavor that both leads and lingers alongside a funky, sour, wheat flavor makes this one of the most nuanced and subtle saisons on the list.
