Pittsburgh Fog from Fury Brewing Co.

Pittsburgh Fog is a New England IPA with 7.7% ABV from Fury Brewing Co. in Irwin, PA. New England IPAs are distinguished by their hazy appearance, a growing trend within the craft beer world, and also generally are less bitter than their West Coast brethren.

Aptly named “Fog” pours to a hazy, glowing orange hued brew with a slight off-white head that quickly dissolves to circle the rim of the snifter it’s poured into. The Apollo, Citra and Motueka hops provide a lovely aroma of citrus, particularly sweet and fresh squeezed orange.

Fury’s first New England IPA lives up to its billing with a hop forward flavor that is juicy and flavorful to go with its smooth mouthfeel. There is a definitive bitterness however at the finish that is a bit of a departure from the style and begins to slide into the West Coast bitterness that does linger after each sip.

While sticklers for the style may call this a straight up pale ale it’s actually what makes this such a balanced beer. There’s a wonderful floral, fruity smell that’s followed by a lightly carbonated taste that rounds into a bitter finish. All of this may not spell traditional NE-IPA, but it certainly does lead to a delicious IPA that you may want more than just one glassful of.
