Hopgasm is an American Pale Ale with 6.9% ABV from Manayunk Brewing Company. Both bold in name and bold in their claims Manayunk looks to plant their flag in the “juicy” IPA world with this release.
Juicy IPA’s are usually distinguished by a less bitter flavor profile and juicy sweetness, almost mouthwatering effect when drinking. Hopgasm pours to a mildly hazy amber with a soft white head that barely dissolves while releasing a tropical aroma, think island fruit and flowers.
Using a seven hop combination of Amarillo, Centennial, Chinook, Citra, Columbus, Mosaic and Simcoe there’s a strong backbone of tropical fruit notes upon first sips. Despite the seven hops used and a two week long dry hopping phase this brew has only a slight bitter flavor, which at only 57 IBUs is to be expected. Its well balanced malt profile of 2-Row, C-40 and CaraPils leave a sweet, wet aftertaste.
In a world of hoppy, bitter west coast style IPAs and imperials with ever rising alcohol contents this juicy Hopgasm is something different. It serves as an alternative to those other, currently more popular styles and shows drinkers that pale ales can have a varity of styles of flavors. This is a great beer for both the IPA lover and the skeptic who would like a less, bitter more approachable ale.
