Goedenacht from Draai Laag Brewing Co.

Goedenacht is a bourbon barrel aged Belgian strong ale with 9.5% from Draai Laag Brewing Co. located in Pittsburgh, PA. This ale was brewed with apples, coriander and orange blossom honey before being put into barrels then aged and finally bottled into 1 pint bottles.

Popping the top gives way to a considerable amount of carbonation and big aromatic notes of coriander. Through careful pouring Goedenacht produces only a modest, pearly white head that quickly dissipates leaving some traces of lacing on the glass.

This ale tastes exactly like you’d expect it to based on its aging, use of apples and style; namely, Goedenacht is very champagne-like with its tart apple flavor and high level of carbonation. Made with the Brettanomyces wild yeast strain claussenii there is plenty of pineapple tinged funk in this brew with it showing itself through the ale’s hazy golden color.

Wild or strong ales may be what Draai Laag are now for, but they definitely aren’t for everyone. Granted, if you’re going to dive into the style then you really can’t do much better than the Pittsburgh based brewing company. This particular offering is excellent for pairing, given its white wine/champagne qualities, it will work well with lighter pastas and cream sauces.
