Boulder Bock from Straub Brewery

Boulder Bock is a maibock with 6.9% ABV from Straub Brewery out of St. Marys, Pennsylvania. This maibock is 1/4 of the larger Adventure Series #1 from Straub that also features their Wild Boy hopped lager, Tight Lines kolsch and Ridge Top Runner vienna lager.

Boulder Bock pours to a lighter amber color with plenty of clarity, letting light pass through it with a khaki colored head that slowly dissolves, while leaving a good amount of lacing behind it. There’s a welcoming aroma of noble hops as well as some feint, sweeter notes of roasted malt.

As is traditional with the maibock style of the standard bock beer, Boulder Bock begins with a firm, hop forward flavor. Brewed with Mt. Hood and Liberty hops combine to give bit of bite and spiciness that balances some of the underlying bready, cracker notes and gives the beer some additional nuance.

The finish is somewhat dry with a bitterness that lasts for a short while on the tongue, but its considerable carbonation adds in some crispness. Boulder Bock is both refreshing and somewhat heavy, its malty notes and slightly higher ABV mean that it pairs well with a meal to compliment its flavors.
