Since we are now deep into the colder months, here are some barleywines to keep you toasty.
Named Barleywine since the ABV approaches that of wine, use caution these beers are meant to be sipped!
Blithering Idiot/Insanity – Weyerbacher
ABV: 11.1%
Blithering Idiot – A deep copper barleywine ale with notes of dates and figs. Weyerbacher encourages you to age this, as the flavor grows in complexity.

Insanity – This is made by aging Blithering Idiot in whiskey barrels. The flavors increase in complexity by doing this, and notes of whiskey, vanilla, and oak are added.
Old Horinzontal – Victory
ABV: 11%
Available in 22oz bottles or on draft, this barleywine has tons of barley malts and American hops. You’ll get floral and fruit notes as well as honey malts.
Flying Mouflan – Troegs
ABV: 11.7%
This brew is left to sit in oak barrels for 6 months to gain raisin notes, then the vanilla and chocolate flavors are added. Candied sugar and cocoa nibs are the notes you can expect from this barleywine.
Gratitude – East End
ABV: 11.5%
Available once a year and bottle conditioned, this is a rare find from East End. Many age this as it only gets better tasting.
Yodeler – Draai Laag
ABV: 13.2%
A Belgian inspired barleywine ale, this is bottled with brettanomyces claussenii yeast, and gives off notes of toffee and caramel.
Blind Eye Barleywine – Cave Brewing
ABV: 10.5%
This barleywine is dangerously smooth and has vanilla notes that will keep you sipping. This is available all year, but hard to find. Check their website for locations it’s available.
